American Dreams, Stainless Steel, 156" h x 60" w x 48" d, 2007
American Dreams incorporates an alternating fence and stair as it stretches, winds and weaves towards the sky. Changing the expected form and function of the fence and stair to appear as a fantastical winding road in the distance is meant to capture the many perceptions of achieving the American dream. These "connectors", such as roads and sidewalks, are present every moment as one realizes their dreams. Yet the fence, stair, street and building ultimately create community.
While we are all on our own path reaching, climbing and striving towards our personal goals it is important to identify that we are part of a bigger world. American Dreams uses the recognizable, daily imagery, familiar to us all, to present the constant tension of these dreams and their connection to community.
